The Village of Roselle, IL, located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago (population 22,763), seeks a full-time Permit Technician in the Community Development Department.
This is skilled and responsible administrative work that coordinates customer service activities related to the building permit process in the Community Development Department.
Duties involve compiling, coordinating, and distributing all construction documents to the appropriate authority for review and ultimate approval for permit issuance, provides responses to inquiries in person, by telephone and/or email, and performs a variety of related duties including management of records, maintenance of permit documents, data entry, and fee processing.
This position requires a high attention to detail and must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent customer service and verbal and written communications skills.
Responsibilities:
Provides excellent and responsive customer service to homeowners, contractors, and business owners via the phone, in person, by e-mail and in writing.
Assists Permit and Project Coordinator with requests for building inspections, permits and plan reviews.
Assists in preparation of various reports regarding building permit activities including standard monthly reporting and project specific reporting.
Reviews permit submittals for accuracy and completeness.
Prepares and updates public handouts regarding permit procedures and requirements as needed.
Enters building permits for the Community Development Department and schedules inspections; maintains electronic files and invoices for inspections.
Monitors collection and status of performance bonds.
Tracks individual permit applications to ensure all requirements are met prior to and during construction.
Schedules and coordinates appointments for all positions within the Community Development Department.
Maintains contractor registration/fees, certificates of insurance, and surety bond records.
Issue over-the-counter building permits that do not require review of plans or specifications.
Receive and process payments for all types of permits.
Process Building Certificates of Occupancy and related documents as needed.
Ensures that final inspections are approved prior to issuance of Building Certificates of Occupancy.
Conducts periodic audits of outstanding permits and bonds and ensures necessary follow-up where needed.
Ability to organize complex records to determine better procedures for records maintenance and to suggest or initiate means of improving functions of the department.
May perform clerical duties not requiring special skills or training such as photocopying source documents and related materials, filing such documents, and performing typing.
Follows safe work practices.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High school diploma, and three years of excellent customer service in a high-volume environment, including or supplemented at least one-year related experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Municipal government or permitting experience is a plus.
International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician Certification is desired or the ability to obtain Permit Technician Certification within 12 months of hire.
